EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a significant historical artifact - a letter from Francis Bacon to Sir John Puckering, dated 28th July 1595. The artist, Sir Francis Bacon himself, meticulously crafted this letter that reveals the intriguing dynamics of power and ambition during the Elizabethan era. In this correspondence, Lord Verulam and Viscount St. Albans expresses his disappointment with Sir John Puckering for failing to support his pursuit of the prestigious position of Solicitor-General. The letter is endorsed by Puckering with the poignant remark "Mr Bacon wronging me" highlighting the tension between these two influential figures. The vibrant colors and intricate handwriting in this facsimile capture the essence of an age where handwritten letters were not only means of communication but also works of art. This piece offers us a glimpse into the professional lives and aspirations of individuals in sixteenth-century England. It is worth noting that despite Serjeant Thomas Fleming being appointed as Solicitor-General on November 5th, 1595, it would take twelve more years until Francis Bacon finally assumed this coveted role in 1607. Preserved within the Department of Manuscripts at the British Museum, this remarkable print serves as a testament to both Bacon's literary prowess and his relentless pursuit of success. It invites us to reflect upon how personal ambitions can shape relationships among those vying for positions within society's hierarchy.
