Francois Certain Canrobert, French general, 1869. After serving in Africa, Canrobert (1809-1895) was appointed aide-de-camp to President Louis-Napoleon, and participated in the coup d etat that led to the establishment of the Second Empire. He was wounded at the Battle of Alma in the Crimea in 1851. Made a Marshal of France, he fought at Magenta and Solferino in the Austro-Sardinian War amd commanded the VI Corps in the Franco-Prussian War before surrendering at the besieged city of Metz.
