Last Defeat of Khan Kuchum, 19th century. Creator: Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin

Last Defeat of Khan Kuchum, 19th century. One of 21 watercolors (out of an original 27) from an album relating to the history of the Siberian Cossacks held by the Rare Books Department of the Russian State Library in Moscow. The album was created as a gift for the future Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918, reigned 1895-1917), Most August Ataman of All Cossack Voiskos (Commander of all Cossack troops, a title bestowed by Nicholas I), and presented to him in the summer of 1891 on his return to Saint Petersburg through Siberia from a trip to the Russian Far East. The theme of the album is Cossack history east of the Ural Mountains, beginning with the victory of the Cossack hetman (or ataman) Ermak Timofeevich (died 1585) over Khan Kuchum in 1582 and continuing with subjects from more than three centuries of Russian history

Last Defeat of Khan Kuchum

EDITORS COMMENTS
is a captivating watercolor painting by Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin, depicting a pivotal moment in the history of Siberia and the Cossacks. This masterpiece is one of 21 surviving watercolors from an album chronicling the history of Cossack troops east of the Ural Mountains, presented as a gift to Tsar Nicholas II in 1891. The painting portrays the final defeat of Khan Kuchum, the last major khan of the Kazakh Khanate, in the late 16th century. The scene unfolds atop a dramatic cliffside, with the fallen Khan, dressed in traditional attire, lying defeated at the feet of a victorious Cossack soldier. The Cossack, with a determined expression and brandishing a weapon, stands tall against the backdrop of a vast, unfamiliar landscape. The painting is a testament to the meeting of frontiers between Russia and the lands beyond the Ural Mountains. It captures the essence of a historic moment, marking the end of an era and the beginning of Russian expansion into Siberia. The rich, vibrant colors and intricate details bring the painting to life, making it a valuable addition to the heritage of Russian art. Nikolay Nikolaevich Karazin masterfully conveys the tragic and triumphant aspects of this moment in history. The painting is a poignant reminder of the past, offering a glimpse into the lives of the people who shaped the history of Russia and Siberia.
