EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the majestic beauty of a Giant Otter (Pteronura brasiliensis) swimming gracefully in the rivers of Peru. This flat-tailed, extremely rare species is exclusively found in streams and rivers throughout South America. With its tail excluded, this giant otter can reach an impressive length of 1.5m (3.9ft). Once hunted to near extinction, these incredible creatures are now protected and their population is slowly recovering. The photograph was taken in Saro, within the breathtaking Manu National Park. The image showcases the Brazilian Giant Otter in its natural habitat – a vibrant river surrounded by lush greenery under a clear blue sky. There are no people present, allowing us to fully appreciate the animal's solitary nature as it glides through the water with ease. The otter's open mouth suggests communication or perhaps even a yawn, adding an element of intrigue to this already mesmerizing scene. This photograph beautifully captures not only the physical characteristics of this endangered species but also conveys their vulnerability and need for protection. Art Wolfe's skillful photography brings attention to these extraordinary animals and highlights their importance within our ecosystem. It serves as a powerful reminder that we must continue our efforts to preserve and protect these magnificent creatures for future generations to admire and cherish.
