Charles II Cushion Collection

Charles II (1630-1685) was the King of England, Scotland and Ireland from 1660 to 1685. He was born in Ledbury Herefordshire, England and was the eldest surviving son of Charles I. His father's execution in 1649 led to a period of political turmoil known as the English Civil War. After his father's death, Charles II fled to France where he lived in exile for nine years before returning to England following the restoration of monarchy in 1660. During his reign, Charles II oversaw a period of religious tolerance and economic stability which saw England become a major trading power in Europe. He also established an alliance with France which helped protect Britain from foreign invasion during his lifetime. Charles II died without an heir and was succeeded by his brother James II who reigned until 1688 when he abdicated due to public pressure during the Glorious Revolution.
