EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Louis James Bookman, a remarkable figure in the world of football during the 1917/1918 season. As a proud member of West Bromwich Albion, Bookman's talent and versatility extended beyond just one sport. Not only did he represent Ireland in both football and cricket, but he also left his mark on other renowned teams such as Bradford City, Luton Town, and Port Vale. Bookman's journey to success was not without its challenges. Born into a family of Jewish heritage, he experienced firsthand the harsh realities of antisemitism in Lithuania under Russian rule. In search of a better life for their child, his family made the brave decision to emigrate when Bookman was still young. They changed their surname from Buckhalter/Buchalter to Bookman as they embarked on this new chapter. In this photograph by Colorsport/Wilkes, we witness an individual who defied adversity with unwavering determination and skill. The image serves as a testament to Bookman's legacy within British sports history—a symbol of triumph over prejudice and an inspiration for future generations
