The yellow perch has an olive-green back with golden sides and white belly. Its body is long and slender with two dorsal fins, one of which has spines. They are reach up to 15 inches in length and weigh up to 2 pounds. It feeds on aquatic insects, crustaceans, small fish, mollusks, worms, frogs and other small animals. Spawning occurs in spring when water temperatures reach 50°F or higher; eggs are laid on vegetation or gravel beds near shorelines where they are guarded by the male until hatching occurs after 3-4 days. Yellow perch provide an important food source for humans as well as other predators such as birds of prey and larger fish species like bass or pike.
