King Eider Cushion Collection

King Eider (Somateria spectabilis) is a large sea duck that inhabits the Arctic and subarctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere, and is one of the largest ducks in the world, with a wingspan of up to four feet. The male King Eider has an unmistakable plumage, with its bright white head and neck contrasting against its black back and wings. Its bill is yellow-orange with a black tip. Females are less showy than males, but still have distinctive markings including dark brown heads and necks, white chests, grayish-brown backs and wings, and yellow bills. King Eiders feed mainly on mollusks such as mussels and clams which they dive for underwater. They also eat crustaceans such as shrimp or crabs when available. They nest in colonies near coastal waters or inland lakes during summer months before migrating south for winter months to areas off the coasts of New England or Europe, and are considered threatened due to overhunting by humans as well as habitat destruction from oil spills or other human activities in their habitats.
