Naval guns outside A Shop, Swindon Works c. 1915

Four 6in. naval guns are proudly displayed on the tracks outside of A Shop, with County Tank, No. 2232, in steam, just behind. The guns are mounted on carriages with limbers attached. Both carriages and limbers were made at the Works, with the first orders (and subsequent repairs) for various gun carriages by the Government coming through to Swindon in late 1914. This continued until late 1917

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to a significant period in history, around 1915 during World War I. The image showcases four impressive 6-inch naval guns proudly displayed on tracks outside A Shop at Swindon Works. Standing tall and formidable, these guns symbolize the might and strength of Britain's naval forces during wartime. Behind the guns, we catch a glimpse of County Tank No. 2232 emitting steam, ready for action. This powerful locomotive served as a vital transportation link for these heavy artillery pieces produced at Swindon Works. Both the carriages and limbers seen here were skillfully crafted within these very works. The government's orders for gun carriages started pouring into Swindon in late 1914, marking an important turning point for this industrial hub. Throughout this time frame captured in the photograph, Swindon Works continued its relentless efforts to manufacture and repair various gun carriages until late 1917. This image encapsulates not only the immense scale of munitions production but also highlights how crucial it was to have efficient transportation systems like railways to support war efforts. It serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by countless individuals who contributed their skills and expertise towards protecting their nation during one of history's most challenging periods - World War I.
