Soviet Caspian Sea oil fields, 1978
Soviet Caspian Sea oil fields. Road bridge connecting oil wells in the Serebrovsky offshore oil field, in the Caspian Sea, near Baku, Azerbaijan, in June 1978. Oil is a raw material that is refined into fossil fuels and other products. It is obtained by drilling down to reach underground oil deposits. Here, the oil is below the seabed. In 1978, Azerbaijan was part of the Soviet Union. The oil industry in Azerbaijan was nationalized soon after the Soviet Union invaded in 1920. The Oil Committee of Azerbaijan was created to run the industry, and A. P. Serebrovsky, for whom this oil field is named, was appointed by Lenin to lead the committee

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from 1978 showcases the Soviet Caspian Sea oil fields, specifically highlighting a road bridge connecting oil wells in the Serebrovsky offshore oil field near Baku, Azerbaijan. The image captures a pivotal moment in history when the region was part of the Soviet Union and under centralized control. Azerbaijan's rich reserves of crude oil were nationalized after the Soviet invasion in 1920, leading to the establishment of the Oil Committee of Azerbaijan. A key figure in this committee was A. P. Serebrovsky, appointed by Lenin himself to oversee operations. It is his name that graces this particular oil field. The photograph not only highlights industrial prowess but also underscores technological advancements during this era. The bridge serves as a symbol of progress and innovation within an industry heavily reliant on fossil fuels for energy production. Oil extraction from beneath the seabed required sophisticated drilling techniques and platforms designed to withstand harsh marine conditions. This image offers us a glimpse into these engineering marvels that played a crucial role in harnessing natural resources from Central Asia's largest inland body of water –the Caspian Sea. As we reflect on this historical snapshot, it reminds us how our world has been shaped by industries like oil and gas throughout the 20th century. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable piece as an ode to human ingenuity and its impact on shaping our modern society.
