Roman capitol. Remains of the capitol at Dougga, Tunisia, built in 166 AD during the reign of the emperor Marcus Aurelius. In the foreground is an esplanade linking the Compass of the Winds square (not seen) with the forum (Roman meeting place). The portico (upper centre) comprises a peristyle or colonnade of six fluted Corinthian columns. The capitol is topped by a pediment, the triangular gable, depicting Antonius Pius entwined with a giant eagle. Also called the Capitoline Temple, the building contained a 6.5 metre tall statue of the Roman god Jupiter
