In the foreground is an esplanade linking the Compass of the Winds square (not seen) with the forum (Roman meeting place). The portico (upper centre) comprises a peristyle or colonnade of six fluted Corinthian columns. The capitol is topped by a pediment, the triangular gable, depicting Antonius Pius entwined with a giant eagle. Also called the Capitoline Temple, the building contained a 6.5 metre tall statue of the Roman god Jupiter
