Reed switch

Reed switch with coil. The reed switch, inside the coil of wire, is an electrical component that is placed in a circuit to allow the circuit to be switched on and off by completing or breaking the circuit. The switch is activated by magnetism, here by an electromagnetic coil. The electricity that flows through the coil magnetizes whatever is inside it. In this case, it magnetizes two metal contacts inside the switch. These contacts attract each other, bend, and touch. This completes the circuit. When the electromagnet is switched off, the magnetism is lost, and the contacts spring apart. For internal details, see T355/242

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from Science Photo Library showcases the intricate workings of a Reed switch with coil. A vital electrical component, the Reed switch is strategically placed within a circuit to enable seamless switching on and off by completing or breaking the circuit. In this particular image, we witness the activation of the switch through magnetism generated by an electromagnetic coil. As electricity courses through the coil, it imparts magnetization onto its surroundings. Within the Reed switch lie two metal contacts that are irresistibly drawn towards each other due to their newfound magnetic properties. The contacts gracefully bend and ultimately make contact, successfully closing the circuit and allowing for uninterrupted flow of electricity. However, when this electromagnet is deactivated, its magnetic influence dissipates instantly. Consequently, these once-attracted metal contacts spring apart swiftly, resulting in an open circuit state once again. The internal intricacies of this technological marvel are truly fascinating; they exemplify how physics seamlessly intertwines with electronics to create functional devices like Reed switches. This photograph serves as a testament to mankind's relentless pursuit of harnessing natural forces such as magnetism for our benefit in various fields including technology and engineering.
