Canvas Print : Natural freshwater pearls
Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Natural freshwater pearls
Natural pearls from freshwater mussels. Pearls are accretions of nacre (calcium carbonate) secreted by certain oysters and mussels. The presence of a foreign body (such as a parasite or a grain of sand) within the shell triggers the secretion of nacre by the molluscs mantle. Thin layers are deposited on the irritant particle and, over several years, a pearl is formed. Although commercially valuable pearls are obtained from freshwater mussels and oysters, the precious pearl comes from species of Margaritifera oysters found in tropical oceans. Cultured pearls are cultivated by inserting fragments of clam shell into the shells of farmed mussels and oysters

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of natural freshwater pearls, a true marvel of nature. These pearls are formed through an extraordinary process within the shells of certain oysters and mussels. When a foreign body like a parasite or grain of sand enters their shell, these remarkable molluscs respond by secreting layers upon layers of nacre, which is composed of calcium carbonate. Over several years, this gradual deposition creates a lustrous pearl that captivates with its iridescent glow. While commercially valuable pearls can be obtained from both freshwater mussels and oysters, it is the precious pearl from Margaritifera oysters found in tropical oceans that truly steals hearts. It's important to note that cultured pearls play a significant role in meeting the demand for these stunning gems. Through careful cultivation techniques, fragments of clam shell are inserted into farmed mussels and oysters to stimulate the formation of pearls. This mesmerizing print reminds us not only of the breathtaking allure possessed by natural freshwater pearls but also highlights the intricate processes involved in their creation. Science Photo Library has once again captured an awe-inspiring moment in nature's grand symphony with this image - one that speaks volumes about our planet's ability to produce such rare treasures.
