Canvas Prints from Science Photo Library
Back musculature
Back musculature. Historical artwork of a well- muscled upper body and arm of a human male by the Italian artist, engineer and scientist Leonardo da Vinci (1452-1519). Da Vinci was among the first people ever to produce anatomical drawings. Also seen is Leonardos mirror writing. He wrote backwards with his left hand to achieve this script. Leonardo habitually wrote like this in his notebooks. This may have been to prevent the theft of his ideas or to avoid charges of religious heresy due to conflicts between his writings and the doctrine of the Catholic church

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases an exquisite historical artwork by the legendary Italian artist, engineer, and scientist Leonardo da Vinci. Dating back to the 15th century, this masterpiece focuses on the intricate details of the back musculature in a well-muscled upper body and arm of a human male. Leonardo da Vinci's contribution to anatomical drawings was groundbreaking, making him one of the pioneers in this field. The print also reveals his distinctive mirror writing technique - he wrote backwards with his left hand to achieve this unique script. This peculiar habit was likely employed as a safeguard against idea theft or potential charges of religious heresy due to conflicts between his writings and Catholic doctrine. The monochrome illustration beautifully captures every contour and sinew of the muscular torso, providing an insightful glimpse into Leonardo's anatomical expertise. The naked figure exudes strength and power while showcasing Leonardo's meticulous attention to detail. This historical image not only serves as a testament to Leonardo da Vinci's artistic genius but also offers valuable insights into our understanding of human anatomy during the Renaissance period. It is truly remarkable how this fifteenth-century artwork continues to captivate audiences today with its timeless beauty and scientific significance.
