John Fritz, American mechanical engineer
John Fritz (1822-1913), American mechanical engineer. Fritz was mainly concerned with iron and steel manufacturing. He was one of the first to use the Bessemer process for making cheap, pure steel. He also pioneered the use of the Thomas basic process for removing phosphorus from iron ores during steel making. Fritz also developed large steam hammers and powerful blast furnaces. He was the first recipient of the John Fritz medal, in 1902
