Col TEM of HIV viruses budding from a T-cell
AIDS virus. Coloured Transmission electron micrograph of a T-lymphocyte blood cell infected with Human Immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the causative agent of AIDS. At bottom is the T-cell surface (orange), with spherical virus particles in close proximity. The core (red) of each virus, containing RNA, is seen. HIV instructs the cell to reproduce more viruses which bud away, as here, from the cell membrane, to reinfect other T- cells. By this process of viral budding the T-cell is killed. Depletion of the number of T-cells in the blood is the main reason for the destruction of a persons immune system in the disease of AIDS. Magnification: x32, 400 at 6x4.5cm size

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate world of HIV viruses and their devastating impact on T-cells, captured through a coloured transmission electron micrograph. The image reveals a T-lymphocyte blood cell infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), the notorious culprit behind Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). At the bottom of the frame, we observe the vibrant orange surface of the T-cell, while spherical virus particles loom ominously nearby. Highlighted in red, each virus core contains RNA – its genetic material. In this visual representation, we witness how HIV manipulates its host cell to produce more viruses that bud away from the cell membrane. These newly formed viruses go on to infect other vulnerable T-cells, perpetuating a vicious cycle that ultimately leads to the destruction of these vital immune system components. The depletion of T-cells in an individual's bloodstream lies at the heart of AIDS-related immunosuppression. This photograph provides crucial insight into how this relentless viral budding process contributes to such devastation. With a magnification level of x32,400 and presented as a 6x4.5cm print by Science Photo Library, this image serves as both an educational tool and a stark reminder of our ongoing battle against HIV/AIDS.
