RNLI volunteers gather outside Manchester Town Hall on a historic day for charity

RNLI volunteers gather outside Manchester Town Hall on a historic day for charity fundraising.
Until the late 1880s, the RNLI mostly relied on wealthy philanthropists for financial support.
On 10 October 1891, the first charity street collection in history occurred, born out of tragedy when five years earlier 27 men from Southport and St Annes died while trying to rescue sailors from the stricken vessel Mexico.
Around 30, 000 people turned out in Manchester to watch the parade of bands, floats and two horse-drawn lifeboats.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a historic moment for charity fundraising as RNLI volunteers gather outside Manchester Town Hall. In the late 1880s, the RNLI heavily relied on the generosity of wealthy philanthropists to support their life-saving missions. However, everything changed on 10 October 1891 when an unprecedented event took place - the first-ever charity street collection in history. The tragic loss of 27 brave men from Southport and St Annes while attempting to rescue sailors from the ill-fated Mexico had deeply impacted communities nationwide. As a result, around 30,000 compassionate individuals flocked to Manchester to witness a remarkable parade featuring bands, floats, and two horse-drawn lifeboats. This photograph transports us back in time to that significant day in Victorian-era England. It symbolizes not only the resilience and dedication of RNLI volunteers but also highlights how ordinary people came together to support this noble cause. The image serves as a poignant reminder of humanity's capacity for compassion and collective action. As we admire this piece of history preserved by Memory Lane Prints' staff, let us reflect upon the invaluable work done by charitable organizations like RNLI throughout generations. Their commitment has undoubtedly saved countless lives at sea and continues to inspire others towards acts of kindness and selflessness today.
