A Cabbies Christmas spirit was dashed after council officials objected to fairy
A Cabbies Christmas spirit was dashed after council officials objected to fairy lights and a miniature tree in his taxi.
Steve Keogh and a couple of other drivers had the bright idea of joining Liverpools city centre lighting extravaganza by improving the look of their dour black cabs.
" We fitted the lights up ourselves and bought the little nine inch high trees as centrepieces. They are well out of the way of the passenger accommodation and don t affect my view driving" saiid Peter.
But Liverpool City Council Hackney Carriage Inspectors have bluntly told him to take the decorations down. 7th December 1988

A Cabbie's Christmas Spirit Dashed - Council Officials Reject Festive Decorations in Taxi
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from 1988, we witness the heartwarming yet disheartening tale of a cabbie whose festive spirit was crushed by the stern objections of council officials. Steve Keogh and his fellow drivers had ingeniously decided to enhance their dour black cabs with fairy lights and miniature trees, aiming to join Liverpool's city centre lighting extravaganza. "We fitted the lights up ourselves and bought these adorable nine-inch-high trees as centrepieces". Peter explained. "They are positioned well out of the way of passengers and don't obstruct my view while driving". However, their creative endeavor was met with an unexpected blow when Hackney Carriage Inspectors from Liverpool City Council bluntly ordered them to remove all decorations. The photograph captures both disappointment and defiance on Steve Keogh's face as he stands beside his adorned taxi. The image serves as a poignant reminder of how even small acts of holiday cheer can be met with bureaucratic resistance. It highlights the customs and traditions cherished during Christmastime in England, particularly in Liverpool, Merseyside. Decades later, this snapshot transports us back to a time when individuality clashed with regulations but also reminds us that sometimes it takes just a touch of whimsy to brighten our lives during the festive season. This memory encapsulates not only transportation history but also reflects upon broader themes such as community spirit and resilience against adversity
