The Blitz refers to the strategic bombing campaign conducted by the Germans against London and other cities in England from September of 1940 through to May 1941, targetting populated areas, factories and dockyards. At the outbreak of the war all Londoners were given gas masks in case of attack. Children were no exception. Infact, they were given a special Mickey Mouse gas mask (age 2-4). For younger children a special hood was developed to go over their prams. It soon emerged though that chemical weapons weren t the problem, but more conventional bombs. Obviously gas masks were no protection against these so a new strategy of sending children to the country as evacuees was developed. Many children spent most of the war away from home and returned to cities ravaged by the blitz.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This powerful print captures the harsh reality of life during the Blitz in September 1941. In a war-torn city, children can be seen collecting firewood from a bombed building, highlighting their resilience and determination amidst destruction. During this period, London and other cities in England were subjected to relentless German bombings targeting both civilian areas and key infrastructure. The threat of chemical weapons led to all Londoners being issued gas masks for protection, including young children who were given special Mickey Mouse gas masks or hoods for their prams. However, it soon became evident that conventional bombs posed a greater danger than chemical attacks. As a result, authorities devised a new strategy of evacuating children to safer rural areas away from the cities. Many youngsters spent most of the war separated from their families, only returning to find their hometowns devastated by the relentless bombing campaign. This poignant image serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made by ordinary people during World War II. It showcases not only the bravery and adaptability of these young individuals but also highlights how they bore witness to unimaginable destruction at such tender ages. The photograph is an important historical artifact that offers us insight into one aspect of wartime life - where even children had no choice but to confront adversity head-on while striving for survival amidst chaos and uncertainty.
