EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning watercolor artwork by the renowned Dutch naturalist artist JG Keulemans, featured in Sir Walter Lawry Buller's "A History of the Birds of New Zealand," Vol.3 Plate 47, dates back to 1888. The illustration captures the distinctive features of two unique penguin species native to New Zealand's subantarctic islands: the Yellow-eyed Penguin (Hoiho, Megadyptes antipodes) and the Snares Crested Penguin (Eudyptes robustus). The Yellow-eyed Penguin, with its vivid, golden-orange eyes and distinctive red-orange bill, is the largest of New Zealand's penguin species. They are also known as Hoiho, which translates to "yellow-eyed penguin" in Maori. These penguins are found primarily along the South Island's eastern and southern coasts, and they are well adapted to their rocky, forested habitats. The Snares Crested Penguin, also known as the Snares Island Penguin or the Rockhopper Penguin, is characterized by its crest of yellow feathers on its head and chest, and its black and white plumage. They are named for their agile ability to "hop" from rock to rock in their rocky breeding colonies. These penguins are found only on the Snares and Bounty Islands, located in the subantarctic region south of New Zealand. Keulemans' masterful painting showcases the intricacies of these two remarkable penguin species, providing a glimpse into the natural history of New Zealand's unique avian inhabitants. With vibrant colors and meticulous attention to detail, this artwork remains an invaluable contribution to the study and appreciation of the natural world.
