This portrait, painted by the renowned Dutch artist Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn (1606-1669) in 1633, depicts Johannes Wtenbogaert (1557-1644), a prominent figure in the Dutch Republic during the 16th and 17th centuries. Wtenbogaert served as a chaplain in the court of Prince Maurice of Nassau (1567-1625), the Stadtholder of the Dutch provinces. The portrait showcases Wtenbogaert's distinguished appearance, with his long, grey beard and the black calotte, or skullcap, worn by Protestant ministers. He is dressed in a tabard, a long, loose garment worn over a tunic, and a gorget, a protective collar.
