EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the final moments of United States Navy Douglas A3D-2P Skywarrior 144847 (msn 12093, unit code PP, call sign 933) as it flew with VAP-61 over Quang Binh Province in North Vietnam on 1 January 1968. The Skywarrior, a twin-engine propeller-driven all-weather attack aircraft, was serving with VCP-63 at the time. However, during this mission, the aircraft was unfortunately hit by anti-aircraft artillery (AAA). Despite the damage, the crew managed to fly the aircraft for approximately 30 miles off the coast of North Vietnam before crashing. Tragically, all three crew members were killed in the incident. This image serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and sacrifices made by the United States Navy personnel during the Vietnam War.
