Paris, France - Chapelle Russe (Russian Chapel, 1862): A Glimpse into the Rich History of Orthodox Christianity in Europe This stunning photograph, taken in 1862, captures the breathtaking beauty of the Chapelle Russe, or Russian Chapel, located within the grounds of the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Paris, France. The chapel, designed by the architects Joseph-Louis-Charles Goustin and Vassiliev, was built between 1847 and 1852, commissioned by Tsar Nicholas I of Russia as a token of gratitude to France for its support during the Crimean War. The chapel's architectural style is a unique blend of Byzantine and Muscovite influences, with intricately carved wooden interiors and ornate gold-leaf decorations.
