EDITORS COMMENTS
This full page scan from The Sphere, a special supplement published by Illustrated London News Ltd in 1920, captures the poignant and historic moments marking the end of the First World War. The top image shows the destroyer Verdun arriving at Dover's Admiralty Pier on 10th November 1920, carrying the Unknown Warrior, whose identity was never revealed, who was to be interred at Westminster Abbey as a symbol of the sacrifices made by the British and Empire forces during the war. The lower image depicts the double column of Bluejackets following the procession as it left the Cenotaph on Armistice Day, 11th November 1920, marking the end of the war and the beginning of the peace. The solemn ceremony paid tribute to the millions of lives lost during the conflict and honored the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen soldiers." "The Unknown Warrior's pilgrimage from France to England was a national event, with thousands lining the streets to pay their respects. The procession passed through major cities, including Dover, before reaching London, where the Unknown Warrior was interred at Westminster Abbey in a tomb designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. The Armistice Day ceremony marked the official end of the First World War, which had lasted from 1914 to 1918, and the beginning of a new era of peace and remembrance." "This photograph is a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made during the war and the deep sense of loss and mourning felt by the British people. The image of the Bluejackets following the procession, with their heads bowed in respect, is a moving testament to the courage and resilience of the soldiers who served and the gratitude of the nation for their sacrifices.
