EDITORS COMMENTS
This image is taken from Curtis's British Entomology, Plate 528, featuring the Neuropteran insect, Coniopteryx psociformis, also known as Conwentzia psociformis. The intricately detailed print, created between 1824 and 1839, showcases the delicate beauty of this insect, with its elongated body, net-like wings, and distinctive psociform (psocid-like) legs. The Neuroptera order, to which Coniopteryx belongs, is often referred to as the lacewings due to their delicate, lacy wings. The plant depicted in the background is Trifolium glomeratum, commonly known as Round-headed Trefoil. This hardy perennial herb is native to Europe, North Africa, and western Asia, and is characterized by its rounded, densely flowered heads. The plant's small, yellow, pea-like flowers bloom from June to September, attracting various pollinators, including bees and butterflies. This entomological plate was produced by the renowned British naturalist and illustrator, John Curtis, FLS. Curtis's British Entomology is an extensive work, consisting of 1,150 plates, and is considered a seminal contribution to the field of entomology. The plates were produced between 1825 and 1839, making this an important record of the insects of the 19th century. The intricate detail and accuracy of the illustration, coupled with the natural history knowledge conveyed, make this print an invaluable resource for both scientific and artistic purposes. The delicate interplay between the Coniopteryx psociformis and the Round-headed Trefoil creates a stunning visual representation of the intricate relationships between insects and their plant habitats.
