EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite handcolored botanical copperplate engraving, taken from Joshua Hamilton's Culpeper's English Family Physician; or Medical Herbal, published in London in 1792 by W. Locke, showcases two intriguing members of the hawkweed family: Mouse ear hawkweed (Saxifragaceae: Leptopus rudus) and Narrow-leaved hawkweed (Saxifragaceae: Hieracium angustifolium). The Mouse ear hawkweed, also known as Mouse-ear Saxifrage, is depicted on the left side of the image. Its common name derives from the small, ear-shaped leaves that cling to the stem, providing a distinctive appearance. These plants are native to Europe, Asia, and North America, and are characterized by their rosettes of hairy, rounded leaves and yellow, daisy-like flowers. On the right side of the engraving, the Narrow-leaved hawkweed is presented. This hawkweed species, also known as the Narrow-leaved Hawkbit, is easily identified by its slender, lanceolate leaves and yellow, composite flowers. It is native to Europe and Asia, and is often found in meadows and grasslands. Botanical illustrations like this one played a crucial role in the development of herbal medicine and the scientific study of plants during the 18th and 19th centuries. This particular engraving, with its vibrant colors and meticulous detail, is a testament to the dedication and skill of the botanical artists and engravers of the time. The historical significance of these plants extends beyond their medicinal uses. They are also of interest to modern botanists, ecologists, and naturalists, who study their ecology, taxonomy, and evolution. This beautiful engraving serves as a reminder of the rich history of botanical exploration and discovery.
