EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite watercolor on vellum, dating back to the late 17th century, showcases two magnificent species of dragonflies: the Migrant Hawker (Aeshna mixta) and the Brown Hawker (Aeshna grandis), skillfully painted by the renowned Dutch artist Rachel Ruysch (1664-1750). The intricate details of their delicate wings, intricately veined and shimmering with iridescence, are captured with remarkable precision. The Migrant Hawker, with its dark body and bright orange pterostigma, is depicted in the lower half of the painting, while the Brown Hawker, characterized by its brown body and transparent wings, hovers gracefully above. Ruysch, known for her exceptional botanical and still-life paintings, was also an accomplished entomologist, showcasing her keen observation skills and appreciation for the natural world in her insect illustrations. This work is a testament to her mastery of the watercolor medium and her deep understanding of the anatomy and behavior of these fascinating arthropods. The Migrant Hawker and Brown Hawker, both members of the Aeshnidae family and the order Odonata, are commonly found in Europe and Asia. These agile insects are characterized by their large, transparent wings, long, slender bodies, and large, compound eyes. They are skilled fliers, capable of hovering in mid-air and displaying impressive aerial acrobatics during courtship. This stunning work of art, part of the extensive collection of insect paintings by Dutch artists from the 17th to 19th centuries, is held in the Library and Archives. It serves as a reminder of the rich history of natural history art and the important role it plays in documenting and celebrating the beauty and diversity of the natural world.
