EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie-Louise of Austria (1791-1847), the second empress of Napoleon I, is depicted in this beautiful photograph taken in the park at Saint-Cloud near Paris. Marie-Louise, born as Archduchess of Austria, was the last Austrian Habsburg to rule as Empress of the French. She became Napoleon's second wife in 1810, following the annulment of his first marriage to Josephine de Beauharnais. The serene expression on Marie-Louise's face in this image belies the tumultuous political climate of the time. Napoleon had just returned from his disastrous Russian campaign, and the French army was in retreat. Marie-Louise, who was only 18 years old at the time of her marriage, was a pawn in the power struggles between Napoleon and the European powers, who sought to limit his influence. Despite the challenges, Marie-Louise proved to be a popular and beloved empress. She was known for her beauty, grace, and kindness, and she endeared herself to the French people. In the park at Saint-Cloud, Marie-Louise enjoyed the simple pleasures of nature and the company of her children. This photograph, taken in the early 19th century, offers a glimpse into the life of a young empress who played a significant role in European history. Marie-Louise's story is one of love, politics, and power, and it continues to fascinate historians and scholars to this day.
