LCC- MFB Notting Hill fire station, West London

Notting Hill fire station (A10) was built in 1868 by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), located at 83 Ladbroke Road. The previous year, escape ladders were put under the control of the MFB who took over this role from the Royal Society for the Preservation of Life from Fire. Here the escape ladder is seen by the Fire lantern, although the MFB now carried these ladders on horse drawn escape carts. The station closed in 1915 and was converted to a private residence

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in the late 1890s, showcases the Notting Hill fire station (A10) located at 83 Ladbroke Road in West London. Established in 1868 by the Metropolitan Fire Brigade (MFB), this historic building was one of the first fire stations in London to house escape ladders. Prior to this, the Royal Society for the Preservation of Life from Fire had been responsible for the provision and control of these essential safety devices. In this image, an escape ladder is prominently displayed next to a fire lantern, a common tool used by firefighters during the Victorian era. However, it's important to note that the MFB had begun carrying escape ladders on horse-drawn carts by this time. The station, a fine example of late-19th-century architecture, served the community for over 50 years before it closed in 1915 and was later converted into a private residence. The Metropolitan Fire Brigade, a precursor to the modern-day London Fire Brigade, played a crucial role in firefighting and safety in London during the late 1800s and early 1900s. This photograph offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, showcasing the dedication and commitment of the MFB to protecting the people of London from fire hazards. This photograph is part of the extensive collection of historical images at Mary Evans Picture Library, providing valuable insights into the rich history of London and its firefighting services.
