EDITORS COMMENTS
of Marcus Elieser Bloch's "Naturgeschichte der ausländischen Fische: mit sechs und dreissig Ausgemalten kupfern nach originalen" (Natural History of Foreign Fish: With Sixteen and Thirty Copperplates after Originals, 1785-95) features an exquisite illustration of the Kyrtus indicus, also known as the Indian humphead or forehead brooder. This bony fish belongs to the family Kurtidae, order Perciformes, and class Actinopterygii. The Kyrtus indicus is native to the Indian Ocean and the western Pacific, inhabiting shallow waters near coral reefs. This large, colorful fish is easily recognizable by the distinctive hump on its forehead, which is used for head-butting during territorial disputes. The illustration captures the fish's vibrant colors, with its body adorned in a mix of blues, greens, and yellows, and its dorsal, anal, and caudal fins displaying striking bands of red and white. Bloch's meticulously detailed illustration is a testament to the natural history research of the 19th century. The plate includes a label with the scientific name, "Kurtus indicus," and a brief description of the fish's habitat and behavior. The illustration was produced using the copperplate printing technique, which was popular during this period for its ability to create highly detailed and accurate images. The Kyrtus indicus is an important species in its ecosystem, serving as a nurseryfish and providing food for larger predators. Its distinctive appearance and interesting behavior make it a popular subject for marine biologists and aquarium hobbyists alike. This beautiful illustration offers a glimpse into the natural history of this fascinating fish and the scientific exploration of the natural world during the 19th century.
