EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Regalecus glesne, ou Poisson-Roi, et Trachipterus arcticus, ou Poisson-Deal," was created between 1816 and 1830 as part of Jussieu's Dictionnaire des Sciences Naturelles. The illustration was produced by the skilled hands of artist Jean Gabriel Pretre, with engraving by Massard and direction by Turpin, and published by F. G. Levrault. The engraving showcases two remarkable deep-sea fish species: the King of Herrings, Regalecus glesne, and the Deal Fish, Trachipterus arcticus. The King of Herrings, also known as the Billfish or Swordfish, is a large, elongated fish with a distinctive long, pointed beak or bill. The Deal Fish, on the other hand, is characterized by its long, slender body and unique dorsal fin, which resembles a fan. Jean Gabriel Pretre was a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later became the artist to the Museum of Natural History. His meticulous attention to detail is evident in this exquisite engraving, which captures the intricate patterns and textures of these deep-sea dwellers. The handcoloring adds an additional layer of depth and vibrancy to the image, making it a true masterpiece of natural history art. This engraving is a testament to the fascination with the natural world during the 19th century and the importance of accurate documentation and representation of new discoveries. It serves as a reminder of the beauty and diversity of the ocean and the importance of preserving and studying these magnificent creatures.
