EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, published by F. G. Levrault between 1816 and 1830, features three vibrant and intricately detailed marine species: the John Dory, or Zeus faber, the Emperor Angelfish, or Pomacanthus imperator, and an unidentified species of reef fish, possibly Hippolyte or Cloquet. The illustration was created by the skilled hand of Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The John Dory, depicted in the center of the image, is a popular food fish with a distinctive silver body and dark spots. Its common name comes from the mythological figure Jove, or Jupiter, due to its large, dark spot on its side, believed to resemble the god's lightning bolt. To the left, the Emperor Angelfish, with its striking blue and yellow body and black markings, is shown in all its regal splendor. This large angelfish is a dominant species in its tropical reef habitat and is known for its distinctive, fan-like pectoral fins. The third fish in this composition is an unidentified reef fish, possibly a Hippolyte or Cloquet species. Its vivid colors and intricate patterns add to the overall beauty and diversity of this enchanting underwater scene. This exquisite work of art, created by Pretre and expertly engraved by Massard under the direction of Turpin, is a testament to the natural history illustration techniques of the early 19th century and a reminder of the rich biodiversity of our oceans.
