Born in Domrémy, Lorraine, in eastern France, Joan of Arc (1412-1431) rose to prominence during the Hundred Years' War between France and England. Her military successes earned her the moniker 'The Maid of Orléans.' However, her triumphs were short-lived. In 1430, Joan was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English, who put her on trial for heresy and cross-dressing. Despite her impassioned defense, she was found guilty and sentenced to be burned at the stake.
