EDITORS COMMENTS
The Great Raid on Tobruk: A Heroic Battle Between the Allied Forces and the Axis Powers, as Depicted in The Sphere Magazine on October 3, 1942 The Great Raid on Tobruk, a pivotal moment in the North African Campaign of World War Two, took place on the night of September 15-16, 1942. In an audacious amphibious assault, the Royal Navy, Royal Marines, and Commandos launched a surprise attack on the fortified port and harbor of Tobruk, Libya, held by the Axis powers. The objective was to destroy enemy fuel supplies and prevent further advances by the German and Italian forces. This evocative image, taken from The Sphere magazine, published on October 3, 1942, captures the intensity and bravery of the Allied forces as they stormed the shores of Tobruk. The photograph shows Royal Marines and Commandos wading through the Mediterranean Sea, carrying their equipment and weapons, as they approach the enemy-held beaches. The Royal Navy ships can be seen in the background, providing cover with their guns and searchlights. The raid was a resounding success, with the Allied forces managing to destroy significant quantities of enemy fuel and supplies, as well as taking hundreds of prisoners. However, the operation came at a cost, with over 300 Allied soldiers killed or wounded. This powerful image serves as a poignant reminder of the heroism and sacrifice displayed by the Allied forces during the Great Raid on Tobruk, a turning point in the North African Campaign of World War Two.
