EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving depicts two exquisite hummingbird species: the Crimson Topaz Hummingbird (Topaza pella) and the Long-billed Starthroat (Heliomaster longirostris). The image is taken from the "Dictionnaire de Naturaliste: Omnithologie" (Dictionary of Natural Science: Ornithology), published in Paris between 1816 and 1830. The illustration was created by the skilled painter of natural history, Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), who later became an artist at the Museum of Natural History. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The Crimson Topaz Hummingbird, also known as the Topaz Hummingbird, is a small, vibrant bird native to Central and South America. The male is characterized by its brilliant red plumage, while the female has a green back and a white belly with red spots. The Long-billed Starthroat, on the other hand, is a larger hummingbird species with a distinctive long, straight, and bright red bill. The male has a metallic green back and a chest adorned with a bright orange patch, while the female has a green back and a white belly with red spots. This beautiful and intricate engraving is a testament to the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time. The natural history community during the early 19th century was dedicated to documenting and preserving the wonders of the natural world, and this engraving is a prime example of their efforts. The work of Pretre and his collaborators contributes significantly to the historical record of ornithology and zoology, providing a window into the natural history of the past.
