EDITORS COMMENTS
Carlos Maria Isidro de Borbon, also known as Don Carlos (1788-1855), was an infante of Spain and a prominent figure in Spanish history as the pretender to the throne during the Carlist Wars. Born on March 12, 1788, in Madrid, Don Carlos was the eldest son of King Charles IV and his wife, Maria Luisa of Parma. He was educated in the military tradition, reflecting the Spanish monarchy's emphasis on the martial arts and military discipline. This striking portrait captures Don Carlos in his military regalia, wearing the sash of the Order of the Golden Fleece, one of the most prestigious orders in the Spanish monarchy. The infante's serious expression and piercing gaze convey a sense of determination and resolve, reflecting his unwavering commitment to claiming the throne. Don Carlos's claim to the throne arose from his father's abdication in favor of his brother, Ferdinand VII, in 1808. When Ferdinand was deposed by Napoleon Bonaparte, Don Carlos was recognized as the rightful king by some factions in Spain. However, his reign was short-lived, as he was defeated in the Battle of Baylen in 1812, and he went into exile in France. Despite his military defeats, Don Carlos continued to rally support for his cause, leading a series of uprisings against the liberal forces that sought to establish a constitutional monarchy in Spain. The Carlist Wars, which lasted from 1833 to 1876, pitted Don Carlos and his supporters against the liberal forces, resulting in widespread violence and instability. Despite the tumultuous nature of his political career, Don Carlos remains an important figure in Spanish history, symbolizing the deep-rooted divisions and complexities of Spanish society during the 19th century. This portrait, with its evocative depiction of the infante in military regalia, serves as a powerful reminder of the political and historical significance of this intriguing figure.
