EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning photograph captures the grace and power of The Grand California trotting mare Sunol as she sets a new record of 2:10 1/2 at three years old. Sunol, a beautiful bay mare, was sired by the renowned stallion Electioneer and her dam, Waxana, was by Gen l Benton. The grandam of Sunol, Waxy, was by the legendary Lexington. The year is estimated to be around 1890, a time when horse racing was a popular sport and horses like Sunol were celebrated for their speed and agility. In this image, Sunol is shown in full stride, her muscles taut and her eyes focused on the finish line. Her sleek coat glistens in the sunlight, and the determination in her expression is palpable. The influence of her sire, Electioneer, is evident in Sunol's powerful build and strong gait. Electioneer was a champion trotter in his own right, setting records and winning races throughout his career. Sunol's dam, Waxana, was also a successful racer, passing on her athleticism and speed to her offspring. The influence of Gen l Benton and Lexington is also apparent in Sunol's lineage. Gen l Benton was a prominent breeder and owner of Standardbred horses, and Lexington was one of the founding sires of the breed. The combination of these great bloodlines made Sunol a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack. This photograph is a testament to the beauty and power of the horse, and the importance of breeding and racing in California's history. Sunol's record-breaking performance continues to be celebrated over a century later, making her a true legend in the world of trotting horses.
