EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph from the early 1900s showcases a playful interaction between a sealion and its keeper at a French zoo. The sealion, a marine mammal native to both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, is easily identified by its external ear flaps, long foreflippers, and short, thick fur. Belonging to the family Otariidae, or eared seals, this species is one of six extant and one extinct species in the family. Seals are fascinating creatures, capable of both swimming gracefully in the open sea and walking on all fours on land. In this image, the sealion seems to be enjoying a moment of respite from its aquatic life, engaging with its keeper in a friendly exchange. The old and new French zoo in the background adds an intriguing historical context to the image, transporting us back in time to an era when such encounters with exotic animals were a novelty for many. This beautiful color print, part of the Boswell collection, serves as a testament to the enduring fascination humans have with these magnificent creatures.
