EDITORS COMMENTS
This colored engraving depicts Alexander III of Russia (1845-1894), the Emperor of Russia from 1881 until his death in 1894. Born as Alexander Alexandrovich of the House of Romanov, he was the eldest son of Tsar Alexander II and Empress Maria Feodorovna. Alexander III is often remembered as a strong autocrat and a peacemaker, who managed to maintain the Russian Empire's territorial integrity during a time of significant international tension. In this portrait, Alexander III is shown in his grand imperial uniform, adorned with numerous medals and decorations, including the Order of the White Eagle of Poland and the Order of the Black Eagle of the Kingdom of Prussia. The engraving, published in The Spanish and American Illustration in 1877, captures the Emperor's stern yet resolute expression, accentuated by his prominent mustache. Alexander III's reign was marked by several significant events, including the Congress of Berlin in 1878, which led to the establishment of the Balkan League and the eventual dismantling of the Ottoman Empire. He also oversaw the creation of the Russian Federation, which brought together various ethnic groups under the Russian rule. Despite his militaristic image, Alexander III was known for his honor and dedication to his people. He is depicted here as a man of great dignity and authority, a fitting representation of the powerful and complex figure that he was. The intricate details of the engraving, from the folds of his uniform to the delicate shading of his facial features, add to the overall impression of grandeur and historical significance.
