EDITORS COMMENTS
Adelaide Russell, nee Lister (1807-1838), was the first wife of the esteemed British statesman, Lord John Russell. Born into a prominent family, Adelaide was the eldest daughter of the 1st Earl of Lister and Lady Elizabeth Milbanke. Her marriage to Lord John Russell, who would later serve as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1846 to 1852, took place in 1826. This portrait of Adelaide Russell, taken around the time of her marriage, showcases her striking beauty and elegance. Her piercing gaze and poised demeanor speak to her strength and intelligence, qualities that likely attracted Lord John Russell to her. The intricately detailed gown she wears, adorned with lace and a high collar, is indicative of the fashionable attire of the time. Adelaide and Lord John Russell had three children together: John, who would later become the 1st Earl Russell, Francis, and Anne. Tragically, Adelaide passed away in 1838 at the young age of 31, leaving her husband and their three young children behind. Lord John Russell was deeply affected by her death and never remarried. This photograph is a poignant reminder of Adelaide Russell's brief but significant life and her enduring impact on British history as the first wife of a prominent Prime Minister. The portrait also serves as a testament to the beauty and grace of the women of the time, whose influence extended far beyond the confines of their homes.
