EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the esteemed David George van Lennep, a senior merchant of the Dutch Factory at Smyrna, along with his wife and children. The central focus is on Anna Marie Leidstar, elegantly dressed in Turkish attire, seated on a long yellow couch alongside her husband David George. Their youngest son Jacob rests comfortably on Anna's lap while wearing a charming yellow dress. Standing beside them on the couch is their daughter Hester Maria, holding a delicate flower. David George exudes authority as he dons Western clothing and holds two letters in his hand. On the left side of the couple sits grandfather Justinus Johannes Leidstar, sporting an impressive mustache and dressed in traditional Turkish garb. To their right stands Mr. D Antan, entrusted with overseeing the children's education as he peruses through a book. Elisabeth Clara, their eldest daughter adorned in vibrant Turkish clothing embellished with flowers and feathers, leans gracefully against a table while clutching a drawing pen. Two more daughters sit cozily at their father's feet upon a luxurious Turkish carpet; Cornelia Jacoba wears an elegant blue dress while Anna embraces her sister affectionately as they share an apple between them. In the foreground to the left are David George's two oldest sons - David brandishing a sword and George Justinus proudly displaying his bow and violin. This remarkable painting by Antoine de Favray (attributed to) transports us back to 18th-century Smyrna where this illustrious family thrived amidst cultural diversity and opulence.
