The Battenberg children D880019c

OSBORNE HOUSE, Isle of Wight. The Ryde Album. Portrait of a family group. These grandchildren of Queen Victoria are the four children of Prince Henry of Battenberg and Princess Beatrice. They are Prince Alexander (1886-1960), Princess Ena (1887-1969), Prince Leopold (1889-1922) and Prince Maurice (1891-1914). This is probably a mourning photograph, commemorating the death of their father. They are all wearing black and looking at a photograph frame that Alexander is holding, it is most likely a picture of their father. He died of a fever (malaria) whilst serving with the British Army out in West Africa in 1896, aged only 38. Tragically Prince Maurice, seen here aged 4, also died in the army. He died in 1914 in the first battle of Ypres at the start of World War I, aged only 23

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant print captures a solemn moment in the lives of the Battenberg children, taken at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. The four grandchildren of Queen Victoria - Prince Alexander, Princess Ena, Prince Leopold, and Prince Maurice - are depicted here as a family group. Dressed entirely in black attire, their somber expressions hint at the profound loss they have endured. The photograph is believed to be a commemoration of their father's untimely death. Prince Henry of Battenberg passed away at just 38 years old from malaria while serving with the British Army in West Africa in 1896. Holding a picture frame that likely contains an image of their late father, young Prince Alexander stands at the center of attention. Tragedy struck this family once again when Prince Maurice, seen here as a four-year-old boy full of innocence and promise, lost his life during World War I's first battle of Ypres in 1914. He was only 23 years old. Through this snapshot frozen in time, we catch glimpses into both childhood innocence and unimaginable grief experienced by these Victorian-era children. It serves as a reminder that even those born into privilege are not immune to heartache and tragedy. Preserved by Historic England Photo Library for its historical significance rather than commercial use purposes, this photograph offers us valuable insight into one particular chapter within British royal history – one marked by sorrow but also resilience amidst adversity.
