EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th century photograph captures a tender moment between Queen Josefina of Sweden, née Eugenie de Beauharnais (1807-1876), and her eldest son, Crown Prince Carl (later King Carl XV) of Sweden, born in 1826. The image, taken by renowned Swedish photographer Fredric Westin, showcases the elegant bond between mother and son. Queen Josefina, also known as Desirée Clary, was the daughter of a French merchant and the former fiancée of Napoleon Bonaparte. She became Queen Consort of Sweden in 1828 when she married King Carl Johan Bernadotte (1763-1844), who later abdicated in favor of their son, Carl, in 1859. In this photograph, Queen Josefina wears a stunning beauharnais-style dress, a fashion popularized by her mother-in-law, Empress Joséphine of France. The dress, characterized by its high waistline and full skirt, is adorned with intricate floral patterns and a vibrant color palette. The young Crown Prince Carl, dressed in the formal attire of the time, stands beside his mother, gazing up at her with admiration. The photograph not only serves as a testament to the fashion trends of the era but also highlights the deep connection between the Queen and her son. The image is a beautiful reminder of the love and devotion that transcends the boundaries of royalty and time.
