Horses drinking, 1952. Creator: Shirley Markham
Horses drinking, 1952. Illustration for " Jamaica Inn" by Daphne du Maurier. Shirley Markham (1931-1999) studied Graphic Design and Illustration at Central School of Art in London from 1950-1952. The writer, artist, poet, and illustrator Mervyn Peake (1911-1968) was one of her tutors, and her style of drawing was also influenced by other British illustrators such as Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake and Edward Bawden. Markham spent time in the Dolomite Mountains in Italy, and also visited Rome, sketching classical buildings. After graduating from Central, she worked as a graphic designer, producing book illustrations, cartoons for comics, menus and programmes. She gave up her promising career however when she got married in 1957. Middle-class women at that time were expected to devote their energies to bringing up children and running the home, and despite her obvious talent, she lacked the confidence to return to illustration. Her portfolio remained in the family attic for many years, but now her work is published here for the first time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Horses drinking, 1952" is a testament to the incredible talent of creator Shirley Markham. Born in 1931, Markham honed her skills in Graphic Design and Illustration at the prestigious Central School of Art in London during the early 1950s. Under the guidance of renowned artist Mervyn Peake and inspired by British illustrators like Edward Ardizzone, Quentin Blake, and Edward Bawden, Markham developed a unique style that shines through her work. In addition to her studies, Markham embarked on an artistic journey across Italy's Dolomite Mountains and Rome. These experiences allowed her to sketch classical buildings and absorb new influences into her artistry. Following graduation from Central School of Art, Markham delved into a successful career as a graphic designer. Her illustrations adorned book pages, comics' panels, menus, and programs with undeniable charm. However promising this path seemed for Markham's future prospects as an illustrator; societal expectations prevailed when she married in 1957. Sadly but not uncommonly for middle-class women during that era, she felt compelled to dedicate herself solely to raising children and managing household affairs. Despite possessing immense talent within her craft, self-doubt hindered any return to illustration. For years afterward, Markham's portfolio lay dormant in the family attic until now - its long-awaited debut publication unveils hidden treasures for all art enthusiasts to appreciate anew. This remarkable collection serves as both homage to Shirley Markham's extraordinary abilities and a reminder of how societal pressures can stifle even the brightest creative spirits.
