Gustav Nachtigal giving presents from German emperor Wilhelm I (including a portrait of Wilhelm) to Umar of Borno in acknowledgment of kindness shown to German travellers. German explorer Gustav Nachtigal (1834-1885) visited Sheik Umar of Borno (died 1881), ruler of the Kanem-Bornu Empire (which formerly existed in areas what are now Chad and Nigeria).
