(painted wood and linen) by Egyptian 12th Dynasty (1991-1786 BC); 25x59x12 cm; Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge, UK; (add.info.: When model boats were placed in tombs, there were usually two, one for sailing upstream (sails up) the other for rowing downstream. Some of the difficulties of navigating the waters of the Nile can be seen in the actions of the crews. On both boats, pilots stand on the bow and originally they may have held something with which to test the depth of the water. On the sailing boat, two men lean on long poles to push off and help the boat through the shallows. The steering mechanisms can clearly be seen on both models. ); eFitzwilliam Museum; Egyptian, out of copyright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable model sailing boat from the Tomb of Khety, dating back to the Middle Kingdom in ancient Egypt. Crafted with painted wood and linen, this exquisite piece is currently housed at the Fitzwilliam Museum in the University of Cambridge, UK. The significance of these model boats lies in their purpose within tombs. Typically, two models were placed - one for sailing upstream with its sails up and another for rowing downstream. These models offer insights into the challenges faced by sailors navigating the Nile River. The crew's actions are depicted vividly; pilots stand on the bow, potentially using tools to measure water depth. On both boats, men can be seen leaning on long poles to navigate through shallow waters. The steering mechanisms are intricately detailed on both models, providing a glimpse into ancient Egyptian shipbuilding techniques. This artifact not only highlights their advanced knowledge of navigation but also serves as a testament to their craftsmanship. With its stylized design and traditional Egyptian attire worn by the figures aboard, this model sailing boat transports us back thousands of years to an era when river travel was essential for trade and exploration.
