The Hall of Liberal Arts and Planets

6253537 The Hall of Liberal Arts and Planets by Fabriano, Gentile da (c.1370-1427); Palazzo Trinci, Foligno, Umbria, Italy; (add.info.: Foligno, Trinci Palace: The Hall of Liberal Arts and Planets. In this hall the symbolic figures of the seven planets are represented (Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Sun) following the order of the days of the week. Each planet oversees a phase of human life that is depicted inside concentric disks where in the middle zone, the Air, the Sun and the Moon define a specific time of day. On the north wall of the Hall the Arts of Trivio (Grammar, Dialectic, Rhetoric) and of the Quadrivium (Arithmetic, Music, Geometry and Astronomy) were depicted, according to a hierarchical order of learning that leads to the point of arrival of all human knowledge, Philosophy, which triumphs in the center of the wall opposite the window. Each planet influences a phase of human life, each phase of human life corresponds, on the learning scale, with a different discipline, each discipline is similar, in its properties, to one of the celestial spheres. The decoration is entrusted to Gentile da Fabriano, the greatest exponent of international Gothic in Italy, with help (Jacopo Bellini, Paolo Nocchi, Francesco Giambono from Bologna and Battista di Domenico from Padua), and created trail 1411 and 1412.
EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases "The Hall of Liberal Arts and Planets" by Gentile da Fabriano, located in the Palazzo Trinci in Foligno, Umbria, Italy. The hall is adorned with symbolic figures representing the seven planets - Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, and Sun - following the order of the days of the week. Each planet governs a phase of human life depicted within concentric disks that define specific times of day through the presence of Air, Sun, and Moon. On one wall are depicted the Arts of Trivium (Grammar, Dialectic, Rhetoric) and Quadrivium (Arithmetic Music Geometry Astronomy), arranged hierarchically to represent different levels of learning leading to Philosophy at its pinnacle. Each planet influences a phase of human life which corresponds to a different discipline on the learning scale. These disciplines share properties with celestial spheres. Gentile da Fabriano was entrusted with this magnificent decoration project between 1411 and 1412. He was renowned as Italy's greatest exponent of international Gothic art during that time period. Assisting him were Jacopo Bellini Paolo Nocchi Francesco Giambono from Bologna and Battista di Domenico from Padua. This particular print focuses on a detail depicting Rhetoric within "The Hall". It captures not only Gentile da Fabriano's artistic brilliance but also highlights Ghigo Roli's talent for capturing fine details through his lens.
