EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a German arquebuser from the 16th century, beautifully depicted in extraordinary attire. The arquebuser is adorned in a striking costume consisting of chainmail, puffed sleeves, and multicolored patterned stockings. The handcolored illustration by E. Lechevallier-Chevignard, lithographed by A. Didier, L. Flameng, F. Laguillermie, was featured in Georges Duplessis' renowned book "Costumes historiques des XVIe, XVIIe et XVIIIe siecles" (Historical costumes of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries) published in Paris in 1867. This publication served as a continuation of an earlier series on costumes from the 12th to the 15th centuries. Georges Duplessis himself was an esteemed curator at the Bibliotheque nationale and Edmond Lechevallier-Chevignard was a highly talented artist known for his illustrations and interior design work for public buildings and churches. In this image captured by Bridgeman Images for Fine Art Finder's collection curated by Florilegius (not the company), we are transported back to a time when soldiers donned elaborate outfits that were both functional and visually stunning. This print not only serves as a visual delight but also offers us insight into historical fashion trends during one of Europe's most fascinating periods - truly capturing the essence of artistry through time.
