Lake Van is a large saline lake located in the eastern part of Turkey, near the border with Iran, and is the largest lake in Turkey and one of the largest saltwater lakes in Western Asia. The lake has an area of 3,755 km2 and a maximum depth of 451 m, and is fed by numerous small rivers and streams, including the Murat River which flows from Mount Ararat to its western shore. The lake's main outflow is via its only outlet, the Van River which empties into Lake Urmia in Iran. Lake Van has been an important source of fish for local communities since ancient times and it also provides habitat for several species of migratory birds such as flamingos, pelicans, egrets and ducks.
