John Tenniel (1820-1914) was an English illustrator and cartoonist, best known for his work in the British satirical magazine Punch. He is most famous for illustrating Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. His illustrations are considered to be some of the finest ever produced for a children's book. Tenniel also created political cartoons, including one depicting Prime Minister William Gladstone as a knight rescuing Britain from a dragon representing Irish Home Rule. He was knighted by Queen Victoria in 1893, becoming Sir John Tenniel.
